Since moving to Denia a few months ago, we’ve slowly started to explore the beautiful areas surrounding our new home. Yesterday, the kids and I decided to take a short road trip to Altea, a picturesque gem not far from Alicante. If you’re considering a visit, here’s everything you need to know to make the most of your day.
Why Visit Altea?
Altea is famous for its charming whitewashed houses, cobblestone streets, and stunning sea views. It’s like stepping into a postcard! The town has a peaceful yet vibrant atmosphere, making it a perfect spot for families, couples, or solo travelers looking for a slice of traditional Spanish charm.
How to Get There
Altea is about a 45-minute drive south from Denia. The drive itself is easy and scenic, with views of the Mediterranean coastline. If you’re not driving, there are regular buses and trains connecting Denia and Altea.
Highlights of Our Day
1. The Old Town
• The heart of Altea is its Old Town, perched on a hill with narrow, winding streets lined with white houses adorned with colorful flowers. Each turn feels like a discovery.
2. Plaza de la Iglesia
• At the top of the Old Town is the square with the iconic blue-domed church, Nuestra Señora del Consuelo. The plaza is lively yet serene, surrounded by cafes and boutique shops.
3. Local Cafe Stop
• We enjoyed a relaxing coffee on a terrace overlooking the sea. The kids loved the freshly baked pastries, and I couldn’t help but savor the slow pace of life.
4. Views to Remember
• The views from the top are breathtaking. On one side, you have the vast blue sea, and on the other, the mountains. It’s a photographer’s dream.
5. The Bull Statue
• We stumbled upon a unique local feature: a bull statue symbolizing Altea’s connection to traditional Spanish culture. The kids were fascinated by its size and the history behind it.
Tips for Visiting Altea
• Wear Comfortable Shoes: The cobblestone streets are charming but require sturdy footwear.
• Parking: Drive up to the Old Town early in the day to find parking near the main square.
• Timing: Visit in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat.
• Explore the Shops: Many local artisans sell unique handmade goods and art—perfect for souvenirs.
Altea’s beauty lies in its simplicity and timeless charm. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing escape or a cultural experience, this little town has something for everyone.
